According to the Spanish website Fichajes, Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on signing Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic at the end of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino is said to be admirer of creative playmaker, but reportedly Spurs will face competition for the Croatia international from Real’s La Liga rivals Sevilla.
The former Inter Milan and Dinamo Zagreb midfielder moved to the Bernabeu last summer for reported fee of €35m, but has failed to hold down a regular place in Zinedine Zidane’s plans.
The player, having struggled to settle in Spain, making just seven league starts all season, could be eager to leave the La Liga giants for more playing time. Moreover the Croatian international could seek to rejuvenate his career at the club at which Luka Modric made his big breakthrough.
The 21-year-old is noted for his creativity, vision, excellent passing and ability on the ball and was huge for Inter before move to Spanish capital. As Spurs will play in Champions League next season, they might need to bolster the squad by adding a quality central midfielder like Kovacic.
The two clubs have done business in recent years, with Luka Modric and Gareth Bale both moving to Santiago Bernabeu from White Hart Lane. Also the Royal club might prefer to send Kovacic to London, rather than in local rivals Sevilla.
